What is analog TV ? |
Historical method of representing a television signal as a replica{analog} of the
original picture and sound. This analog of the original signal is carried throughout the
transmitting/receiving process by altering{modulating} either the strength of the signal
{a.k.a Amplitude Modulation or AM} or the frequency of the signal{a.k.a Frequency
Modulation or FM} |

What is ATSC ? |
(Advanced Television Systems Committee) Industry committee formed to develop
and recommend the standards for advanced{digital HDTV/SDTV} television in the U.S . |
What is Decoder ? |
A television set-top device which enables the home subscriber to convert an
electronically scrambled television picture into a viewable signal.
This should not be confused with a digital coder/decoder known
as a CODEC which is used in conjunction with digital transmissions . |
What is digital TV ? |
A method of representing a television signal as a series of numbers.
The numbers making up the picture elements are encoded in binary form as a series
of 1’s and 0’s. The digital signal can thus be computationally manipulated to eliminate
redundancy{compressed} to allow much higher picture and sound quality to be
transmitted in a given spectrum space. |
What is HDTV ? |
High-Definition Television: Generally describes a television picture comprised of
at least one million pixels{five to ten times greater picture resolution{definition}
than standard television} and presented in a widescreen{16:9} aspect ratio.
HDTV also assumes the capability of multi-channel surround sound . |

What is NTSC ? |
(National Television System Committee) A committee formed by the FCC in 1940,
comprised of industry engineering experts, to develop a recommendation for
television standards to be adopted by the FCC.
The FCC adopted the NTSC recommended standards on April 30, 1941.
The NTSC color TV system was adopted by the FCC on December 17, 1953.
Also, stands for the current standard for analog television broadcast . |
What is SDTV ? |
(Standard Definition Television) Standard Definition TV is defined as all Digital formats
below the HDTV level. This will usually mean 480I or 480P.Generally describes the
resolution(definition) of astandardtelevision picture.
Astandardtelevision picture definition is generally assumed to be that of todays
NTSC broadcast television signal. However, it could be substantially less
(such as VHS quality), or substantially more (such as DVD quality).
There are no audio or picture aspect ratio assumptions . |
